Unofficial TWRP installation guide for OnePlus X


OnePlus X Just released to the smartphone market, there is already a version TWRP Recovery for it. However, this is a build in progress and has not been officially released yet, so some features will be missing and operation is unlikely to be stable. However, basic functions like flash, backup, advanced settings work on this build. With so many versions, stability can be expected. The TWRP build is compatible with all device variants including the one for the Chinese market. However, the language will be English when implemented.

Once the custom recovery is installed, you can then start flashing a new custom ROM or install SuperSU to gain root access on the device. But before proceeding you need to perform bootloader unlock on OnePlus X.

You also need to proceed setup adb and fastboot to install TWRP on your OnePlus X. If it’s your first time, follow the instructions step-by-step. Remember to back up everything before proceeding to install TWRP on your device.

Backup data and applications

In the process of doing, do not clean up your data, but it is best to make a backup. Once you have installed a custom recovery like TWRP, you need to make sure to back up your system, data, etc. from the recovery. It will be very helpful in case.


  • This guide is compatible with OnePlus X. Don’t try it on any other device.
  • You need unlock bootloader to install a custom recovery like TWRP on your device. Click here.
  • Set up adb and fastboot on your computer. You can download ADB and fastboot tools from now (unzip it) or have quick install ADB and Fastboot from now.
  • You need to install USB driver for your computer to be able to successfully connect between your computer and OnePlus X.
  • Open “Setting” -> “Developer Options” and activate USB Debugging on your phone. To activate the development option you need to touch “Build Number” in About Phone many times (About 7 times).
  • Go to the “Developer options” (Developer options) and activate OEM Unlock (“Allow oem unlock“).

Instructions for installing TWRP for OnePlus X

  1. Download the recovery image files of your choice. Unzip if in case the download is a zip file. Store it on your computer where you can easily locate it.
  2. Make sure you have setup ADB and fastboot on PC your. Also accept “Always allow from this computer” (Always allow from this computer) when you plug in the device for the first time to enable USB Debugging.
  3. Now power off the phone and disconnect the USB.
  4. Boot into bootloader or fastboot mode. To do so, press and hold the volume down key and the power button simultaneously for 5-6 seconds. When you see the bootloader screen, connect your phone to the computer using the USB cable. (Select fastboot if option available) Alternatively, you can use the following command in a terminal or command prompt, while your device is connected to your computer to enter fastboot mode.

    adb reboot bootloader

  5. Navigate to the location where you have placed the recovered files. Rename the recovery files to recovery.img. While the folder containing the recovery.img file is open, hold the shift key on your keyboard and right click on an empty area and select “Open command window here” to open a cmd window.
  6. Now use the following command type in CMD command window to check your device connection.

    fastboot devices

  7. Next flash the custom recovery. Run the following command for that.

    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

  8. The custom recovery will be installed on your device. Now boot your phone in recovery mode. You can do this by turning off the phone and then pressing and holding the volume down and power keys at the same time. Or you can use the following command.

    fastboot boot recovery.img

  9. When entering recovery, you can backup your current ROM, data, EFS and more.

Alternatively, on Linux or Mac OS, use the command “./fastboot flash recovery recovery.img” to flash TWRP recovery. Once you have TWRP installed, you can set up and install custom packages.
