Unlock Windows computer with fingerprint sensor on Android phone

Have you ever wanted to remotely unlock your Windows PC using your Android phone’s fingerprint scanner (fingerprint sensor)? An app called Finger Unlock can help you with that right now.

One of the cool features of Windows 10 to be “Windows Hello“. It’s a system that allows you to unlock your Windows PC using your face, fingerprint, or using a PIN code instead of a long password. Depending on the hardware on your laptop or computer, you’ll be given one, two, or all of the options. Most computers still don’t have the hardware to enable facial recognition or a fingerprint sensor. Although, most smartphones have a fingerprint scanner sensor. So can you use your Android phone’s fingerprint sensor to unlock your Windows PC?

The answer is definitely yes. Samsung lets Samsung device owners do that with an app called Samsung Flow. Samsung has had a long partnership with Microsoft. A long-term partnership with Microsoft isn’t necessary to unlock your Windows computer with your phone’s fingerprint sensor. And that was demonstrated by XDA member Andrew-X and his new app. An app called Remote Fingerprint Unlock allows you to unlock any Windows PC through the fingerprint scanner on your Android smartphone.

Security

If you’re concerned about your privacy and security, and you should, here’s what the developer has to say:

I spent about 40% of my development time making the app as secure as possible. Communication between Modules is secured by TLS (SSL). Accounts are stored on your computer as they are requested upon unlocking. However, they are encrypted with a key generated based on your fingerprint. According to this article, the generated key is backed by a trusted execution environment, which prevents an attacker from accessing the key even if he has infiltrated the system kernel. In other words, only the fingerprint registered on your phone can access the lock. If you uninstall, reset the app, or even if you change one of your registered fingerprints, the file where the account is stored will be lost forever and you will need to reconfigure the account mine.

Finally, research has been done to ensure that, even locally, your accounts are as secure as possible. No passwords are stored in the application and everything is done locally (between the application and the Windows module) and I, in any way, shape or form, submit over the Internet or see any what you enter in the app.
