Instructions to unlock bootloader for Moto G4 and G4 Plus phones


Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus are the 2 latest devices that Lenovo released for the . series Wood Moto products that Lenovo acquired Motorola from Google. They were launched at an event held in New Delhi. Both the Moto G4 and G4 Plus are equipped with 5.5-inch 1080p screens and a series of improvements over their predecessors and are powered by the Octacore Snapdragon 617 processor. However, the G4 is equipped with only 2GB of RAM and the G4 Plus is equipped with an Octacore Snapdragon 617 processor. There are 2 versions of 2GB Ram and 3GB Ram.

The main distinguishing features between G4 and G4 Plus is the inclusion of fingerprint sensor, better camera on the G4 Plus version. All other things remain pretty much the same in both devices. In terms of software, both are equipped with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with additional features trene camera, moto screen, etc.

In this guide, we will list out the steps to unlock the bootloader of your Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus. Unlock bootloader is a prerequisite step before rooting your device or making any other changes to your system files.

Alert: Following this guide will void your warranty as well as possibly erase your data so you need to be prepared before doing so.


Before doing this, you need to back up important data before doing so. Back up all the apps, photos, music, and all other important data you may have on your phone. You can transfer the data to your computer or use an application to back it up to external storage or to the cloud.

Requirements before implementation

  • You own a Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus and a computer.
  • You need to install the driver for the computer in order for the computer and the phone to connect: link
  • Setting ADB and Fastboot on your computer.

Steps to unlock bootloader on Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus

  1. You go to Motorola’s website, scroll down and click the Next button. Then register an account there, if you already registered at their website you can login.
  2. Now open the Settings app on your phone and go to About phone. Now tap on “Build number” range 7 times, this will unlock development options on your device.
  3. Go back to the main Settings menu and go to “Developer Options” and toggle “Allow OEM Unlock“. Also, enable option USB Debugging.
  4. Now make sure you have successfully installed the USB and fastboot drivers on your computer. Then connect your phone to the computer using a USB cable.
  5. Now type the following command in the ADB and Fastboot window:

    adb reboot bootloader

  6. The previous steps will push your device into bootloader mode. Now type the following command:

    fastboot oem get_unlock_data

    This command will display the results as below:

    $ fastboot oem get_unlock_data
    (bootloader) 0240540162024205#4C4D3556313230
    (bootloader) 30373as313630330df332323239#BD00
    (bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE0a328A2AC0C39F95
    (bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000

    On Desktop Mac OS, the return string format will be


  7. Next you concatenate 5 lines into 1 continuous string without “(bootloader)” or “INFO” or blank to be as follows:


  8. Paste the string above at Motorola’s website in the form: “Can my device be unlocked?“. Click the button, if your device is unlocked you will see a button “Request Unlock Key“.
  9. Click the button “Request Unlock Key“and wait for”key unlock” sent to your email.
  10. Once you receive the unlock key in the mail you registered with, you need to type the following command into the ADB and Fastboot window:

    fastboot oem unlock

    Replace with the unlock key you received in your email. Keep in mind this will unlock your device's bootloader and will also wipe everything off your phone (including internal storage).

  11. Now wait for your device to reboot.

That's it, now your device has successfully unlocked the bootloader. You can now root or install TWRP for Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus.
