Instructions for fixing errors that cannot be searched in Windows 10

2. Click Update & Security.

3. Click Troubleshoot.

4. In the section Find and fix other problems, select option Search and Indexing.

5. Click the button Run the troubleshooter.

7. Click the button next.

8. Continue with the on-screen instructions (if applicable).

After you complete the steps, the search feature should work again.

Fix the search function with Command Prompt

Alternatively, you can also start the Troubleshooter using the Command Prompt:

1. Use the keyboard shortcut Windows + R to open the Run command.

2. Type command cmd and click the OK button.

3. Enter the following command to launch the Troubleshooter and press Enter:

4. Click option Advanced.

5. Select option Apply repairs automatically.

9. Continue with the on-screen instructions (if applicable).

After you complete the steps, the Search and Indexing troubleshooter will scan and fix problems with this feature.

You can also restart your Windows 10 system to control search elements by performing the following steps:

1. Right click on taskbar and select option Task Manager.

Quick tip: Alternatively, you can open Task Manager with keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + Shift + Esc or use keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + Alt + Del and select item Task Managerr.

2. Click the tab Details.

3. Right click on the process SearchUI.exe and select the button End task.

  1. Click the button End process.

After you complete the steps, the system will automatically reboot. If it does not restart immediately, restart the computer, see if the error of not being able to search in Win 10 has been fixed.

If Windows Search is still not working on Windows 10, you can fix the problem by resetting the feature. However, the reset process will depend on the operating system version currently installed on the computer.

4. In the “Windows Specifications, confirm Windows 10 version.

Reset search on Windows 10 version 1903

If your computer is running Windows 10 version 1903, May 2019 update, to reset search, follow these steps:

1. Open the Microsoft Download Center.

2. Click the button Download in the Reset Windows Search PowerShell section.

3. Save the file .ps1 in computer – For example: in the “Downloads” folder.

4. Right click on the button Start and choose option Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Quick tip: Alternatively, you can also open PowerShell with the keyboard shortcut Windows + CHEAP, enter the command PowerShell and use keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + Shift + Enter to enable the command as administrator.

5. Enter the following command to execute the current script installation and press Enter:

Get-ExecutionPolicy

6. Confirm the enforcement policy – For example: Restricted.

7. Type the following command to allow scripts to run on the device and press Enter:

Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope CurrentUser -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

8. Type Y and press Enter (if available).

9. Type the following command to run the script and press Enter:

& “C:UsersYOUR-ACCOUNT-FOLDERDownloadsResetWindowssearchBox.ps1”

In the command, substitute “YOUR-ACCOUNT-FOLDER” for your account folder name.

10. Type CHEAP and press Enter.

11. Type the following command to set the initial execution policy for the script and press Enter:

In this example, the Restricted option has been added, since that is the initial setting. If you have a different policy, change it before running the command.

12. Type Y and press Enter.

After you complete the steps, search should start working again as normal.

The Index Settings feature can also cause search results failure on your device. If you have tried all the previous instructions, you can try rebuilding the index database to fix search problems on Windows 10.

To rebuild the Search Index on your device, use these steps:

1. Open Settings.

2. Click Search.

3. Click Searching Windows.

Quick tip: If you are using Windows 10 version 1809 or lower, open Control Panel, click menu View by in the upper right corner and select mode Large icons view and click Indexing Options to continue.

4. Click option Advanced search Indexer Settings.

6. Click the tab Index Settings.

7. In the “Troubleshooting, click the button Rebuild.

8. Click the button OK.

After you complete the steps, Windows 10 will delete and rebuild the index database. While the database is rebuilt, searches from the taskbar, File Explorer, and across the operating system may be incomplete until all files are re-indexed.

In case you see no results in searches and you cannot access the Indexing settings, then the Windows Search service may have been disabled on your computer.

To enable indexing and search services, perform the following steps:

1. Use keyboard shortcuts Windows + CHEAP to open the Run command.

2. Enter the command services.msc and click the button OK.

3. Double-click the service Windows Search.

4. Click the tab General.

5. Using the menu “Startup type” and select option Automatic (Delayed Start).

6. Click the button Start.

7. Click the button Apply.

8. Click the button OK.

After you complete the steps, Windows Search will be re-enabled on your computer and you’ll be able to start searching for files and apps again for the taskbar and File Explorer.
