Install Android 6.0 AOSP ROM for Galaxy S3 i9300


Although the Samsung Galaxy S3 is an old device and Samsung has discontinued software support for it, independent developers are still working on upgrading to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. There are many ROMS available for the device due to its immense popularity. Along with it comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM Latest. Although the Galaxy S3 never got the official Android Marshmallow update, here is an AOSP ROM to upgrade to Android 6.0 for the Galaxy S3.

To install this ROM, your device needs to have TWRP Recovery installed so that you can flash the aosp rom immediately and enjoy it. However it will have some holes since this is the first version. These bugs will be fixed in the future for completeness and stability. Remember to back up everything before you proceed.

  • This custom ROM is only compatible with Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300. You can try it on other devices and variations at your own risk.
  • Make sure you have a custom recovery like TWRP installed on your device. Install TWRP latest version.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged or at least 60%.
  • You must have device driver USB Driver installed on your computer to transfer rom and gapps to memory card of Galaxy S3 i9300.
  • Back up all important data before doing so

Instructions to install AOSP 6.0 ROM for Galaxy S3 i9300

  1. Download Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP ROM and copy to memory card of Galaxy S3 i9300.
  2. You proceed to power off and boot the S3 into TWRP custom recovery mode. To boot into TWRP, press and hold the volume down and power keys for a few seconds until the TWRP logo appears on the screen that you have successfully booted into the custom recovery.
  3. Once you get into the custom recovery it’s a good idea to do a nandroid backup to make sure you can restore at any time in TWRP. Tap backup in TWRP and select system, data, boot, recovery, EFS parameters and swipe right to choose where to save.
  4. After performing a ROM backup, perform a cleanup. Go back to the TWRP main menu and press the delete button and select Advanced Wipe. Then select Dalvik Cache, System, Data, and Cache. Now swipe the confirm button to clean up.
  5. Now go back to the TWRP menu or screen and click on the install option. Navigate to the ROM file and select it.
  6. Swipe the confirmation button to proceed with the installation. ROM will be installed.
  7. Now return to TWRP and click on the install option. Navigate to the Gapps zip file and select it.
  8. Swipe the confirmation button to proceed with the installation.
  9. After installing ROM and Gapps, restart your phone.

If you see the new boot logo, it means you have successfully installed the ROM on your device. If you experience any boot loop or system error, try factory reset from recovery or you can always restore your previous ROM from backup.
