How to disable browsing in Twitter and Facebook apps

For easy access to information, Android apps have a built-in browser. So while using an app, when the user clicks on any external link, the content of that web page opens in the app’s built-in browser.

However, these browsers are not secure all the time. Often you have to observe that when you open a link, it opens with another tab which will show some spam ads. Sometimes you see some spam ads telling you to install some anti-malware application.

However, it is up to the user to choose whether to use the app’s in-app browser or not. This includes various social media apps as well. In this guide we will explain to you how you can disable browser in Twitter and Facebook apps.

How to disable browsing in Twitter and Facebook apps

Social media as we know it is very vulnerable. While these are safe, we often hear about spam attacks, malware links affecting users.

You must have heard about some hoax news with clickbait thumbnails going viral on social media. Innocent netizen shared prank link and clicked on the link. They then end up welcoming malware into their devices.

Social media is like an open playing field. You can collect useful information. At the same time, you will also see hoaxes, clickbait and worthless content as well. Not every internet user is smart enough to draw a thin line between good and bad content.

Besides, a large number of people today use smartphones. They use social media like Facebook and Twitter more than any other app. Therefore, it is likely that these users come across some spam content that redirects to other harmful websites or programs. So it’s better to use secure web interfaces like Chrome or similar portals.

In fact, when you close the browser in the Twitter and Facebook apps, your device gives you the option to open the external link using the dedicated browser apps you have installed on your device.

Disable Twitter’s built-in browser

  • Make sure you’re signed in to your Twitter account
  • You will see your profile picture in the upper left corner of the screen
  • Click profile to expand the menu
  • Next touch Settings and Privacy
  • In the Settings section, tap Display and sound

That’s it. The next time you open a link, it will open in the private web browser you have installed on your Android device.

Instructions to turn off the browser in the Facebook application

Now let’s move on to the popular Facebook app. Here are the steps you can use to disable the browser in the Facebook app.

  • You must be logged in to your Facebook account to make this change
  • While on the home page, tap 3 horizontal bar menu button
  • Scroll down and tap the option Settings and Privacy. It will expand.
  • From the extension, touch menu Setting. It will take you to the next screen
  • Now, tap on the tab Media and Contacts. You should now see a list of options with toggles next to them.
  • Go to options External Open Links. Tap the on button to turn it off. Here is a screengrab that will help you make the process easy.

Now, any external links you might want to open won’t be opened by default with Facebook’s in-app browser. You have to use a standalone browser app for that.
