Even with all the competition from Facebook-licensed streaming services, YouTube still has an audience of over a billion people. The data shows that most users are using the service through smartphones and tablets.
As these devices are ideal for watching short YouTube videos while commuting to work or going to bed at night. And that makes the YouTube app so important. We’ve all watched YouTube at night and were annoyed by the contrast between the video and the bright white app background. That’s why a dark theme on YouTube is such a big deal. Even more so on mobile devices, especially Android devices since the dark theme has been widely released to users of the Youtube app.
Google has begun testing the dark interface on Android right about when it built Android apps on iOS in March. Now the update will be rolled out to everyone without you having to rely on tricks. Dark theme on YouTube
When you launch the newly updated YouTube app, you may see a pop-up at the bottom urging you to use the dark theme. If you touch the . button TRY IT NOW, the dark theme will be applied immediately and everything white will be dark and vice versa even if you zoom out the video. Some users may not get the popup and will have to go to Settings and enable it manually.
To manually enable the YouTube dark theme, tap your Account photo in the top right and go to Setting -> Shared . Here you will find a toggle labeled Dark theme. Turning it on will enable the dark theme but again, it’s nothing for some users right now. If it doesn’t work for you, you may have to go to your device Setting -> Application -> YouTube and FORCE CLOSE application. Restart the YouTube app and the dark theme should work.
If that fails, you can try clearing the internal app storage Setting -> Application -> YouTube -> Memory. Re-upload the app, then go back to Settings and force close the app. It’s all about judgment and trial and error at this point. These little tips may also work if you don’t see the Dark theme toggle button at all settings as long as you have YouTube version 13.35 installed.
Once you get it working, dark mode feels much more pleasing to the eye. Unlike the early days of testing, there weren’t any inconsistencies like black text on a black background as you can see in the screenshot above. The new dark theme is shown below.
